The winery was founded in 1877 by cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino, with the objective of creating "the ideal wine," a Chianti that could age and be sold internationally. Success was immediate, and in 1890, Ruffino was appointed by the Duke of Aosta as the official wine supplier to the Royal Court of Savoy, the Kings of Italy. In 1927, a selection of wine that had been reserved for the duke was labeled for the first time as Riserva Ducale.
